Kauai Day 5: The Tunnels

palm tree lover
Alooooha blog. We are moving on to Day 5 in Kauai! This was taken right in front of our hotel room. Good thing no coconuts fell on our heads while we were staying in the Coconut Grove, eh? Why, a whopping 150 people per year are killed by falling coconuts!

Ono Family Restaurant
We started our morning out right at the Ono Family Restaurant in Kapa’a, within walking distance to our hotel room. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Their bacon fried rice is incredible, and kimchee with eggs? Who knew that combination could be so delicious? We ended up eating at Ono three different times during our vacation.

bright mosaic art
Beautiful bright mosaic art in Princeville, which was the yuppiest town in Kauai (and our least favorite). Day five unfortunately I woke up with a terrible stiff neck that kind of spoiled the day for me. I figured out that the problem was the super-soft pillows on our bed and ended up using a throw pillow to sleep on the rest of the trip. I am prone to stiff necks and it was a major bummer getting one on vacation.

beautiful green church
I had spotted a tiny picture of this amazing green church in Hanalei in one of our tour books and needed to see it in real life. Gorgeous.

Talk about picturesque.

stained glass inside the green church
Inside it was old and musty, like you would expect, but the stained glass was beautiful. I adore stained glass.

green hills above the Tunnels
Our first trip that day was to “The Tunnels” beach, where I avoided snorkeling but figured a little R & R would suit me just fine.

Tunnels
I mean COME ON look at that water! I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to snorkel–the Tunnels is known for its snorkeling. Overall, the snorkeling in Kauai wasn’t as good as the snorkeling in Maui.

Paradise.

Joshy at the Tunnels
This guy had a good time snorkeling without me.

Oh unnnnngggghhhffff posting these pictures is making me want to go back, BADLY.

Josh finally relaxes for 30 seconds
Photographic proof of the ONLY time during the entire 9 days that Josh “rested”. He timed it on his watch: 30 minutes. Uh huh. Maniac.

do not disturb...
Meanwhile, everyone and their mom was clustered around this sleepy little monk seal, snapping away photographs. I approached slowly…

cute monk seal
…and he started squirming up the sand and flapping his little flippers and smiling at me! Smiling! Oh Kauai.

beach at the Tunnels
In spite of the pain, I couldn’t be too irritated. I mean, sheesh. This was also the first really hot and sunny day we had in Kauai.

leaving the Tunnels
Leaving the Tunnels, onto our next adventure. Those blue sunglasses are perfect for an island vacation. Where did I get those? “Red Light”? Perfect.

Coming up next: part 2 of Day 5, the lush and extraordinarily beautiful botanical gardens. Speaking of botanical gardens, my brother called me up yesterday and informed me that he and his future wifey have booked the botanical gardens in Boise for their wedding. Classy choice, brother! I’m stoked!

Other news: this morning I woke up to MARGARET CHO following me on Twitter! Squeal! Squeak! I’ve loved you for ever and ever and ever, Margaret! Oh man I feel so honored. Now I’m going to have to tweet like I mean it. Shit. Pressure.
