How to DIY glitter any pair of shoes easily

Hey kids! I’m going to show you the easiest method to DIY glitter any pair of shoes. So easy, in fact, you’ll be wondering why all of your shoes aren’t coated with glitter!

All you need:
– a pair of shoes
– a paintbrush
– Mod Podge (found at any craft store)
– glitter

Let’s do this!

shoes before
Start with a (clean) pair of shoes. That is, make sure the surface is free of mud, dirt and dog hair.

My shoes started out brown but I spray painted them white about 2 years ago in preparation for this project. Initially I was going to spray paint them neon pink and then coat them with neon glitter, but I decided rainbow glitter seemed more appropriate.

mixing glitter and Mod Podge
Grab a bowl and mix your glitter and Mod Podge together, adding as much glitter as you want, as long as it’s still spreadable. You’ll have to do a few coats, likely, so don’t overdo it (I can’t believe I just said “don’t overdo it”).

I couldn’t find any multicolored glitter at Michaels (!!!!) so I began this project with a mixture of silver/purple/stars glitter that I had on hand.

first coat of glitter
Start painting the shoe! This is what 1-2 coats looked like. If there are parts of the shoe you don’t want to be glittered, be sure to mask them off with masking tape. I wasn’t too concerned about getting it perfect. I also wasn’t satisfied with the glitter, and managed to eventually find the perfect chunky rainbow glitter at Fred Meyers, in the craft aisle.

finished glitter shoes
That’s more like it! Make sure you let your shoes dry between coats. I set mine up in front of a fan to dry faster, and did 1 coat a day until I was satisfied.

Look, fabulous glitter shoes! Now, wasn’t that easy?

I’ve done a tutorial on glittering shoes before, but the best part about this new method of mixing the Mod Podge and glitter together is there is NO GLITTER SHEDDING. As an expert Glitterologist, I can tell you, this is wonderful. The Mod Podge is magical, acting as both undercoat and overcoat, so you don’t even have to seal it–it’s already there.

Was this inspiring to anyone? I hope so! Now, get out there and glitter it up!

  1. I’ve heard of modge podge but thought it was just like pva, do you have to seal it with something to make it waterproof?

    1. Ooh, good question Danielle! I hadn’t even thought of that, and I really should, since I live in Seattle and it’s rain rain rain. Apparently they make “outdoor Mod Podge”, which is supposed to be waterproof. I haven’t tried it–in the past I just always sealed glitter with the UVA-resistant spray I use on my paintings. Maybe I should test these shoes by stomping around in the rain, see if the Mod Podge washes off? What were you thinking about Mod Podging?
