DIY neon nail marbling
FYI, this song has been in my head for something like three days, so here you go! Enjoy! And er, ne’er mind, here’s my DIY tutorial for exciting neon nail marbling! Ready?
Step 1: Paint your nails white. I like “Insta Dri” by Sally Hansen because it has a wide applicator brush and goes on thick in one coat–no need to re-apply.
Step 2: Gather supplies–several colors of nail polish…
…a small bowl/container of room-temperature water, toothpicks (I didn’t have any toothpicks so I had to use shish kabob sticks), and some scotch tape.
Maggie wasn’t interested in this process.
Step 3: Tape the skin around your fingernails–this is to prevent you from “marbling” your skin. It does get messy. Supposedly you can use Vaseline for the same purpose–I may try that next time, as it’s hard to get the tape lined up perfectly against your nails.
Step 4: Drip one drop of each color of nail polish into the water on top of the color before it, making a “bulls eye”. Repeat.
Step 5: Take a toothpick and drag around the “bulls eye”, creating a happy little pattern.
Step 6: Dip a fingernail into the pattern, or two, if you want to cheat. Remove nail polish from water using toothpick (it “grabs” onto the toothpick and cleans up nicely). Repeat for each nail and hey, you’re done!
Ta da! I screwed it up, of course–had to double dip at least two nails and the tape left too much white around the cuticle, which I unsuccessfully tried to fix later on.
The Boy likes them–he says they’re the most “me” nails I’ve ever done, and the girls at the tanning salon where I get my spray of orange chemicals (which the Boy likes to tell me will give me cancer, ANY DAY NOW) complimented them as well. I think they’ll look better the next time I try this, and I’ll definitely try it again.
Whaddaya think, blog readers? Too much trouble? Heh-heh-hello? I miss comments.
your nails are…so…you.
Is that good?
ok i want those nails now
do eeeet!
I love it! what kind of tape did you use? I want to try, although I don’t have the rainbow of polish you have.
just plain old clear tape–although I’m going to try vaseline next time. I’m sure you can achieve the same effect with less colors–just add more layers to the “bulls eye”. good luck! 🙂
what! this looks supremely fussy but loooove the result!!!
thanks Pom! it was a little fussy.
That is amazing! Any chance we could do this when you’re in Oregon? I would love it!!
that’s a good idea! remind me to bring my supplies.
Consider it done!
