Maui Part 13: the Keanae Arboretum

Ready for a massive photo dump from our trip to the lush, incredible Keanae Arboretum? I know I am! My goal is to finish the Maui posts by the end of this month. It’s good to have goals.

j on the trail with f and b up ahead
The arboretum was one of our first stops on the Road to Hana, and it was amazing.

large leaves
Sure, we take the rogs on nature walks all the time around Seattle, but there’s something about flora and fauna from a completely different place that makes it extra spectacular.

amazing vines
Look at all those vines!

joshy next to a cool-looking tree
Everything was huge–the trees, leaves, flowers.

a very tropical portrait
Not that this has anything to do with the arboretum, but I bought that Bob Marley tee-shirt during my first trip to Seattle a million years ago with Nico. I think just about everyone’s taken a turn wearing it. That tee-shirt is a slut!

Be Here Now.

lime sign
Everything had little signs in front, which was very helpful.

Lime trees.

towering palms overhead

beautiful bamboo
Upon first glance, the bamboo plant doesn’t seem that amazing…

liz showing off the beautiful bamboo
…until you see how huge it is! I had no idea bamboo grew so tall.

surrounded by green

feeling that palm tree
I do quite well in a tropical climate. I didn’t want to leave.

lush all around
I found these amazing bright blue perfectly round fruits called “marble fruit”, and put one in my purse (I have no idea why). Later on it got squished. My photos of the marble fruit turned out blurry, but they look like this.

view upstream

metallic leaf
These leaves were metallic silver and incredible to look at in the sun, but the camera didn’t quite pick up the sheen.

l and f by the rainbow tree
This kind of harsh lighting really doesn’t make for the best photo, but I like this one because Fleeta and I look happy.

f and l with the rainbow tree
The tree we are standing next to is a rainbow eucalyptus tree. I had seen photos of those amazing trees from the Boy’s previous trip and was obsessed with finding them during our trip.

rainbow tree with fern
I did, as expected, take about 10,000 photos of the rainbow eucalyptus trees. Anything rainbow, I’m a sucka.

rainbow eucalyptus sign
I want a rainbow eucalyptus tree! (imagine that uttered with a whiny, demanding Veruca Salt voice)

fabulous rainbow trees

self-portrait near the rainbow trees
I had a pee break on one of the trees. For some reason it gave me immense satisfaction that I peed on a rainbow eucalyptus tree.

Family meeting?

carved hearts
Carved hearts. I would never cut into a rainbow eucalyptus tree! How dare they!

rainbow tree towering over
The Boy took some photos of the trees as well. This was one of his.

rainbow stripes

rainbow tree friends
I think we get the point!

fern
Can we move on now?

fronds in front
Oop, last one. Phew!

trail trio
Note to self: protruding your stomach out like a toddler does not make for a flattering photo.

l and b are dwarfed by a tree
Bob and I posing.

l and b exchange glasses
Exchanging glasses was his idea. That was the second time he wore mine that week! It’s okay to admit to a glitter sunglasses obsession, Bob! Join the club!

red ginger
Stunning red ginger.

crepe ginger
Crepe ginger? Mmmm, creeeeeeeepes.

shiny red flowers

happy pair
Aw, I like this one.

palms overhead

palm to palm
I didn’t wear my good rings to Maui. You just never know.

f and b are up ahead
The Boy’s parents charge ahead while we linger, taking photos.

a single palm tree

monstera
“Monstera” is a great name for a plant.

Special bonus: the Boy made a 27-second video of my ass I mean, me walking in front of him at the arboretum. FINALLY video proof of my characteristic walk that makes heterosexual men lusty, gay men jealous (of my swish), and physical therapists point out that I have an “abnormal gait”. I think my grandmother said it best when I was 11 years old: “Look at her go!”
