Maui Part 11: the luau
I’ve been slacking a little in the Maui posts, so to make up for it here’s a big, FAT photo dump from the evening of Day 4, when the Boy’s parents took us to an amazing luau…oh great thanks NOW spellcheck–I just realized that I spelled luau “laua” on 44 photos in Flickr that I have to go back and change. D’oh!
Trying to get a shot of the Sugar Cane Train…
There it is! Adorable. We passed it every day on the way to our hotel.
Since I knew nothing about luaus, I formed an opinion that it would be packed with loud tourists and hyper children, buffet-style, and chaotic. WRONG!
There are several different types of luaus in Hawaii, and the Boy’s parents had carefully selected an excellent one.
It was a fairly intimate setting–tables were set up around the stage and the food was served to you.
Multiple courses were presented, and each course reflected a different culture. I purposely avoided looking at the menu so that I would be “surprised” with each course. I seem to recall sampling a little of everything…except the steak. I hate steak.
We were all in fantastic moods!
The silver glitter that I dusted myself with didn’t show up in the photos, phooey. I also wore false eyelashes (why not pull out all the stops?).
The Boy later remarked that we should have forced someone in the crowd to take a photo of the four of us together, but no one remembered at the time.
Even though my artificial tan was completely gone.
The waiters, the waitresses, the dancers…every single one H-O-T. And tattooed…mmmmmmm.
Before the luau started the Boy and I went down to the shore to take a few photos. They had professional photographers standing on the beach waiting to take photos (for a hefty fee, I’m sure). Me, relinquish control? Mwa ha ha.
Sunsets do wonders for the complexion.
His mother lent him the bracelet.
A dog playing football pauses to sniff the foliage.
Wearing the same silver sandals that I wore on our wedding day.
The MC starts the show. She came out in between each performance wearing a different costume, which I appreciated.
Hold me closer tiny danceeerrrr…(it’s been in my head all morning, sorry).
I snarfed down each course so that I could focus my complete attention on the dancing.
In addition to the photography, I’ve also uploaded 10 (extremely short) videos to Youtube depicting some of the dancing. Here’s the first:
The female dancers.
…and then of course the male dancers. Bubble butts GALORE!
This dude, who I have affectionately named “Beefcake”, was my favorite.
Soooooo cuuuuuute. Nice and stocky–just the way I like ’em.
The video from that dance:
Note how the woman’s head near the end totally blocks my view of Beefcake. Sigh.
Oh yeah. I do love a man in a skirt.
I thought these particular costumes were especially nice to look at.
The facial paint was a nice touch.
The video from this performance:
The female dancers performed poi at the end of this dance. I wasn’t really dazzled, but only because I’ve been spoiled for the last 10 years watching friends/hippies/ravers perform all kinds of different poi, including fire poi. Hell, I even have some light-up poi balls myself (another “failed” hobby, like cross-stitch).
The poi video:
My favorite out of the female dancers performing the Virgin Princess dance.
You really have to watch the video to appreciate her dancing, though:
Quite a vision. She really nabbed the best part, I think. I mean, who doesn’t want to play a sultry, seductive Virgin Princess?
These costumes were fantastic.
The Virgin Princess donned a red-and-black feather boa around her butt to enhance the gyrations.
“I need one of those!” I hissed at the Boy during the performance. I already have the ass shaking down; now I just need that BOA!
They really are shaking their tail feathers.
The dancers also came out in pairs and the crowd was supposed to “vote” (i.e., whoop and applaud) their favorite pair. They were all good.
This video really shows off that ass shaking. It doesn’t hurt that Beefcake’s in it as well.
Now THAT, friends, is a headdress. Worthy of “Priscilla”, even.
Oof. Yeah. I really need to start attaching feather boas to all of my skirts.
Look at that fabulous purple headdress!
I would highly recommend attending a luau at least once. Everything about it was amazing–the food, the service, the dancing, the BEEFCAKE. After the show the female dancers walked through the crowd to shake hands and take in lavish compliments. I looked in earnest for Beefcake but he ran off. Oh well.
Join me next for the 5359345 photos centering around our Road to Hana trip on Day 5. That’s right, Day 5! Only two more days left!
Well if there is a place to slack it would be Maui. Nice!
hi Swan! thanks!
Do you have any pics of the waiters?
Oops…shoulda scrolled all the way down to bottom before I assumed I was at the end of the luau! HAWT!!!!!!!
ohhhh yeah.
