Maui Part 8: the underwater photos

Here’s the deal with the underwater cameras: we bought two disposable underwater cameras initially, and the Boy lost one while snorkeling at Black Rock (I was mad at him for about 7  minutes but discovered it’s a lot of work to yell at someone and tread water at the same time).

We bought two more and filled them up, but when we got all three cameras developed one whole batch turned out as a bunch of colored lines. Depression. My new camera has an underwater function, but do you really think I’d take that chance? BWA HA HAHAHAAAAA.

So here we have the best selection out of the two surviving underwater cameras.

The Boy took this photo of his mother and I gearing up to snorkel that first day. I didn’t edit this photo at all–it came out that pinkish tone, and I love it.

The Boy’s father was trying to give me some pointers before I went out the first time, and I was completely ignoring him and practically racing towards the water.

“She doesn’t take instruction very well, does she?” he asked the Boy.

“Sometimes,” the Boy shrugged.

During one of the hazier snorkeling excursions the Boy managed to nab this photo of a sea turtle.

This was after I abandoned those pesky flippers that were just getting in my way.

I love this one because the fish seems a little grumpy.

l taking underwater photos
My bony back, taking photos at Black Rock, which was the Boy’s/my favorite snorkel area. The water was clear, the coral was plentiful and we saw the most varied types of fish there–including eels and tiny squids that didn’t make it in these photo batches.

The star attraction at Black Rock is a sea turtle named Volkswagon (could you just…???). The first day that I saw him, my camera had already been filled up and I was FURIOUS that I didn’t capture him. The second time we went to Black Rock he came so close to me I had to swim away from him, because in Maui you receive a 500 dollar fine for touching the sea turtles. No joke. I snapped away like a maniac but of COURSE, that was the roll of film that didn’t turn out. The only photos we have of the magical and mystical Volkswagon the sea turtle are a few blurry shots.

It was really amazing being that close to him.

Volkswagon the turtle near the surface
The Boy took this shot of Volkswagon from underneath.

He was diving the whole time we were snorkeling (show off!). After one of the snorkel excursions his face was covered with blood from a bloody nose. I took a few photos of him diving, but they also didn’t make it. He told me that if you dove deep enough, you could hear the whales singing.

Black Rock. This shot turned out amazingly clear–I wish they all had!

Treading water, I snapped this shot of a cliff jumper at Black Rock.

colorful coral at Black Rock
I’m wondering if one of us used the flash for this shot–it turned out so colorful.

You see? Even snorkeling underwater in Maui the self-portrait is irresistible.

Fleeta at Black Rock. We were jealous of the Boy’s diving talents–we are both very good at floating at the surface.

Me, wearing flippers and taking pictures.

The canyons in between the stacks of coral were often the best places to find fish.

Fleeta and I snorkeling together. Maw. I love this shot.

This morning I am off to babysit the adorable and wonderful Miss Ronia, and then possible plans with the Broad. I wanted to have her over to watch “Burlesque”, fresh from Netflix (I’ve been DYING to see it much in the same way I was DYING to see Mariah Carey’s “Glitter”: you know it’s gonna be bad but you just can’t resist). Of course, with the Boy home sick from work today that might not be the best idear. Hmph.

  1. LOVE those underwater shots, the one with the sun is just perfection!

I actually saw Burlesque IN THE THEATER. I know, craaazy! But then, I’m prone to watching eye candy fluffy movies and such anyway.
